How to get to Torres del Paine
The park sits in the Magallanes Region of Chilean Patagonia, and getting here is a three-step problem: fly south, reach Puerto Natales, then cover the last two hours to a park gate. Here is how I’d route it.
Step 1: fly to Punta Arenas
PUQ is the region’s big airport, about 3 hours’ drive south of Puerto Natales. Puerto Natales’ own small airport, PNT, has seasonal flights and lands you right in the gateway town when the schedule cooperates.
Step 2: get to Puerto Natales
From Punta Arenas you have buses and rental cars for the ~3-hour run north. Puerto Natales is the sane base: two hours from the gates, full of accommodation, and the departure point for most tours. Step 3: the last two hours into the park
Two options. Self-drive: rent a car, and buy your entrance ticket in advance online through CONAF, because there is no guarantee of buying at the gate — the entrance fee page covers prices and the booking trap. The main gates operate daily, roughly 08:30 to 20:30. Or take a guided day tour: hotel pickup in Puerto Natales, the driving done for you, and the entrance fee already in the price. Given what rental cars and fuel cost down here, the tour usually wins the arithmetic as well as the convenience.
Coming from El Calafate?
Day tours from El Calafate in Argentina exist, but they involve a border crossing and roughly a 16-hour day. I’d base in Puerto Natales instead — the case is on the El Calafate page.
